How to turn your motorcycle into an era

Come far diventare d’epoca la tua moto

It is not rare to find among motorcyclists those who love motorcycles from a few years ago, perhaps with little electronics and a carburettor engine. Many are looking for a bargain on the second-hand market, even if it is a little bad, but with a few jobs it can return to shine with its own light.

Have you ever thought about transforming your bike from old to historic? To make them acquire value, it is necessary to make it a vintage motorcycle. How to do? Let's see together what are some of the conditions necessary to register it in the Historical Register of the IMF, and evaluate for yourself what the advantages may be.

How old does a motorcycle have to be to be considered a period?
Motorcycles and mopeds with at least 20 years of age from the date of construction can be registered in the FMI Historical Register (the day and month must also be taken into consideration).

What conditions should the bike be in?
It must be as consistent as possible with the original, in excellent condition or well restored. Motorcycles and mopeds must be free of accessories, even if standard and vintage.

What requirements should the owner have?
Those who apply for registration must be registered with the IMF for the current year and also be the owner of the motorcycle.

Does the bike need to be photographed?
7 color photos are required, printed on photo paper in 10x15 format showing: right side, left side, front view, rear view, close-up and legible shot of the engine number, chassis number and one of the chassis number at a distance of one meter.

Does the road tax on a vintage motorcycle have to be paid?
Yes, but from 1 January 2019 a tax relief was introduced which provides for a 50% reduction for vehicles between 20 and 29 years old.

Does a vintage motorcycle need to be insured?
Yes, but thanks to the IMF, special rates have been introduced that provide for the absence of excess and limitations for drivers under the age of 25. It is also not required to have an additional insured vehicle.

What documents are needed?
You need a front / back copy of the vehicle registration document as well as a copy of the complementary sheet and the certificate of ownership.

The IMF is not the only Historical Register where you can register your motorcycle to make it a vintage. Another solution is proposed by ASI, the Automotoclub Storico Italia, but we will talk about it in the next article on the same topic.
